Court Appointed Special Advocates Washington County Logo

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Washington County will recruit, screen, train and supervise volunteers to serve as advocates for children in adjudicated cases of child abuse and neglect, to contribute positive outcomes in child, family and community welfare within Washington County, Maryland.

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Washington County is administered by the Washington County Health Department, and is a member of the National Court Appointed Special Advocates Association and the Maryland Court Appointed Special Advocates Association. Local, state and national Court Appointed Special Advocates programs are built on the belief that all children have the basic right to grow up in safe, nurturing and permanent homes.

Volunteers of Court Appointed Special Advocates programs are men and women who want to help children in their community. They are persons of dedicated interest in, and commitment to, making a difference in the life of one abused or neglected child at a time.

Volunteer Advocates review case files and interview children, biological parents, family members, case workers, foster care parents or group foster home officials, mental/medical health care practitioners, school officials, and others to assess and make recommendations to the juvenile courts regarding the child's best interests as it regards placement (in-home or foster), visitation, mental/medical health care, educational, social, spiritual and/or permanency plan needs.

Court Appointed Special Advocates has a dual purpose to: 1) provide a voice for abused and neglected children in the courts and child welfare systems, and 2) provide a service to the courts and child welfare systems as an advocate for the best interests of an abused or neglected child.
