Health Care for Children and Pregnant Women

The Maryland Children's Health Program (MCHP) has been in effect since July 1, 1998. It is a health insurance program for children up to age 19 and pregnant women. This program gives free and low cost health care to children and pregnant women in families with low to average incomes.

Covered services include:

  • In-Patient Hospital Care
  • Medical Doctor Visits
  • Prescription Medicines
  • Dental Care
  • Eye Care
  • Immunizations
  • Lab Tests

Note:  The Federal Deficit Reduction Act requires that all individuals declaring to be U.S. citizens provide documentation of their citizenship and identity at the time of initial application or annual eligibility review. What documentation is acceptable?

The qualifying income amount changes every year. Income before taxes and other deductions are counted. IMPORTANT:   Even if your income is a little higher than the amount shown for your family size, you and your children may still qualify if you work, pay for child care, alimony, or child support. Therefore, please apply.


  MCHP Premium

If you are not eligible for free health care services through MCHP, your children may be eligible for MCHP Premium. You pay a low monthly premium to purchase health coverage for your children. If you are interested in this program for your children, answer ''yes'' to Question 6 on the application. The cost per family is $44.00 - $55.00 per month. This amount changes slightly each year.

Download an application for the Medical Assistance for Families Program. Applications are also available at the Health Department, School Health rooms, Head Start offices, WIC centers, and Department of Social Services. Mail completed applications to:

Eligible individuals will receive an enrollment packet in the mail so that a managed care organization (MCO) can be chosen as the primary provider.
